Sarah Ficken
Grants Project Manager
516-509-5506
Sarah is Grants Project Manager for Dairy Grazing Alliance (DGA), where she leads the management and execution of several of the organization’s most complex and strategic federal grant initiatives.
A first-generation dairy farmer based in Central New York, Sarah brings lived agricultural experience, strong academic training, and deep nonprofit expertise to her role. As a farmer, she values being an active part of the ecosystem and brings that perspective into her work every day. She is deeply committed to building just and resilient food systems that are both environmentally sound and economically viable.
Sarah serves as project manager for Advancing Markets for Producers, a $4.7 million federal initiative that focuses on deploying precision grazing technologies on grazing farms throughout the Northeast, Mid Atlantic, and Midwest.
In addition to this work, Sarah serves as project manager for DGA’s USDA 2501 grant, Breaking Down Barriers: Linguistically and culturally appropriate skills training, resources, and support to help underserved farmers access USDA programming and prepare for dairy farm ownership. This grant is integral to advancing DGA’s equity and inclusion efforts, particularly in expanding access and support for Spanish-speaking farmers, graziers, and apprentices.
Beyond project management, Sarah is also DGA’s primary grant writer. She has successfully authored multiple proposals and collaborates closely with program staff to translate on-the-ground work into competitive, fundable projects. Her extensive professional network across agriculture, education and nonprofit sectors is a valuable asset in building partnerships that strengthen DGA’s programs.
Sarah holds a B.S. in Natural Resources from Cornell University and an M.S. in Agriculture from Washington State University. She spent more than 10 years supporting farmers through her roles with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Madison County and NOFA–NY, where she worked closely with producers on education, technical assistance and program development.
Outside of DGA, Sarah enjoys picnics “up the hill” with her family, embroidering slightly irreverent wall hangings, drinking coffee, and whenever possible, moving cows to fresh grass alongside her favorite cow, Plum.
